Novel Ideas For Grades 4-6
Novel Ideas is a literacy-enriching camp designed for readers who are ready to explore literature on a deeper level. Using Island of the Blue Dolphins as the centerpiece, this program blends critical literary analysis with creative and interactive activities. This program is a great way to satisfy a summer reading assignment and is designed to be accessible to readers of varying levels.
Throughout the two-week program, campers will explore:
- Literacy skill development, enhancing vocabulary, comprehension strategies and honing writing skills for literacy response and expression
- Critical analysis and exploring themes of resilience, survival, historical expression and cultural appropriation
- Multidisciplinary exploration through art projects, team-building exercises, science, geography and historical inquiry activities
In addition to daily reading and discussion, campers will enjoy structured physical activities, lunch breaks, and morning and afternoon unstructured free time to recharge and connect with peers. Group activities are designed to promote camaraderie and fun, while the program culminates with a creative compare-and-contrast exercise using a PG-rated Disney movie.
Note for Parents: The novel contains mature themes, including death and violence, which will be handled sensitively within age-appropriate discussions. Full 2-week attendance is required to fully experience the carefully designed curriculum.
Before and after care is available with this camp for an additional fee. When registering for this camp, please note whether your camper will need before or aftercare.
Cost: $1000
Payment must be made in full when registering.
