Brushstrokes & Beyond For Grades 4-6
Campers are invited to unleash their creativity this summer with a vibrant journey into the world of impressionism and post impressionism at UD’s The College School! Designed for students entering grades 4-6, this immersive, week-long camp offers a unique opportunity to explore the techniques, history, and magic of the artwork prominent during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Under the guidance of a passionate art teacher and a talented pre-service educator with a flair for creativity, students will delve into the brushstrokes of the masters and create their own stunning pieces in a supportive, small-group setting. Program Highlights (subject to change based on student interests)
Day 1: The Foundation of Creativity
Kick off the week with engaging introductions, a survey of artistic interests, and a comprehensive introduction to art safety. Students will dive into the history of impressionism and post impressionism, learn about color theory, and even create their own color wheels. The day concludes with a first creation inspired by Monet’s water lilies, setting the tone for a week of artistic exploration.
Day 2: The Power of Brushstrokes
Discover the secrets behind impressionist brushwork! Through hands-on activities and expert guidance, students will experiment with blending techniques and gradients. The afternoon features a captivating beach painting project, where young artists will bring shimmering waves to life with their newfound skills.
Day 3: Perspective and Light
Explore the essential components of composition, perspective, and lighting. Students will practice techniques like adding depth and reflections while creating a painting that plays with light and shadow. This day encourages a deeper understanding of how artists like Monet and Renoir brought their scenes to life.
Day 4: Masterpiece in Progress
It’s time to go big! Campers will begin a larger painting inspired by Van Gogh’s “Lemon on a Plate,” focusing on replicating the intricate brushstrokes and color techniques of the masters. With dedicated time to refine their work, students will build confidence in their artistic abilities.
Day 5: Recreating the Masters
The week culminates in the recreation of a famous Monet water lily painting. Students will reflect on their progress, marvel at their creations, and celebrate their growth as impressionist artists. Each camper will take home a collection of their own masterpieces, along with cherished memories of a week spent bringing creativity to life.
Before and after care is available with this camp for an additional fee. When registering for this camp, please note whether your camper will need before or aftercare.
