The College School

Dear College School Families,

Greetings!  Hoping you had a great weekend and were able to get out to enjoy some of the fantastic weather.  Here are some TCS updates:
  • Our trip to Cherry Crest Adventure Farm this past Friday was a blast!  We couldn’t have asked for a more perfect fall day.  Thanks to all of the parent volunteers and faculty/staff chaperones for helping make it a super day for our students!
  • The first quarter ends in less than three weeks (Friday, November 4th)
  • As the weather begins to turn colder, please make sure your child is prepared with the proper clothing–at TCS, we spend a lot of time outside throughout the day so it is important that our students are ready to brave the elements
  • Members of UD’s Fire Prevention/Protection Team will be visiting TCS this Wednesday (10/19) to provide faculty/staff/students with important tips and reminders about fire safety
  • Submissions for the Delaware State Volunteer Poster and Essay Contest are due later this week.  Students have been working diligently to complete their projects.  Last year, we had several winners at the local, regional, and state level.
  • Today, members of our school community wore RED to bring attention to and celebrate Dyslexia Awareness Month.  The color red often symbolizes Dyslexia Awareness because it represents the stigma some dyslexic students feel when teachers mark up their numerous spelling errors with a traditional red pen.  It was also chosen by the International Dyslexia Association as an acronym for Reimagining Education for Dyslexia. Here are a few more announcements from Mrs. Comiez:
During Dyslexia Awareness Month, upper elementary and middle school teachers will carve out some time to show this moving 15-minute video of John Rhodes sharing a metaphor for how he eventually overcame his learning disabilities to become a successful physician. It is entitled: Determination Outwits Learning Disabilities.
Also, homerooms will be collecting donations for the Red Cross to support victims of Hurricane Ian.  Any student who brings in a donation for the Red Cross will have his/her name entered into a homeroom class raffle for Louie the Squishmallow, whose tag says, “Meet Louie.  He has dyslexia and has had to  take a few extra lessons to help him learn to read.”
On October 27th at 7pm, we will be hosting a virtual movie night featuring the film The Big Picture: Rethinking Dyslexia   More information, including the Zoom and registration links, will be provided later in the month.  Mark your calendars!
Please let me know if you have any questions.

Best,
Dr. Phil
