The College School

Dear College School Families,

Greetings!  Here are some of the happenings at TCS:
  • The Scholastic Book Fair wrapped up last week and it was a huge success!  Thanks to everyone who participated in the event by purchasing items and/or helping with set-up, breakdown, etc.  We will have final totals for you in the near future.
  • Once again, TCS will be participating in the Delaware State Volunteer Poster and Essay Contest (Volunteer Firefighters Association).  Last year, TCS had several winners at the local, regional, and state level.
  • On Friday, October 7th, TCS celebrated the accomplishments of Aiden Christel (2020 grad) who is working towards the rank of Eagle Scout.  For his final project, he built a new gaga ball pit and picnic tables and created an outdoor classroom/seating area for TCS.  Thanks to Aiden for beautifying our space and giving back to the school community!
  • Picture retakes and classroom pictures are scheduled for this Wednesday, October 12th.
  • This Friday, October 14th, we will be visiting Cherry Crest Adventure Farm for our annual fall field trip.  Here is a link to Cherry Crest’s website:   www.cherrycrestfarm.com/
  • Dyslexia month (October) began last week.  Wrist bands are being distributed for all students and faculty/staff to wear.  On Monday, October 17th, the entire school community will wear RED to further raise awareness of this “hidden” difference.  See Mrs. Comiez’s email below explaining additional events/activities for the month. Many thanks to Mrs. Comiez for taking the lead on our celebration of Dyslexia and all learning differences!
During Dyslexia Month, homerooms will be collecting donations for the Red Cross to support victims of Hurricane Ian.  Any student who brings in a donation for the Red Cross will have their name entered into a homeroom class raffle for Louie the Squishmallow, whose tag says, “Meet Louie.  He has dyslexia and has had to  take a few extra lessons to help him learn to read.”   The Red Cross was chosen for the charity not only because of the connection to the color red but also because the storms and destruction are fresh in all of our minds.
In art, Caroline will be touching on this topic during her classes by planning lessons that involve the color red and that feature dyslexic artists (of which there are many!)
On October 27th at 7pm, we will be hosting a virtual movie night featuring the film The Big Picture: Rethinking Dyslexia https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2106687/  More information, including the Zoom and registration links, will be provided later in the month.  Mark your calendars!
Finally, keep your eyes open for dyslexia-related posts and information on our social media platforms this month.  There are many myths and misunderstandings about dyslexia, so please help us spread the word.  When teachers distribute the bands, they are sharing developmentally appropriate information from this facts sheet to students:  https://docs.google.com/document/d/13R12KdGtEmVWwgYpPG12TzFJlA5arwp-c__2t4at0O8/edit?usp=sharing
Please let me know if you have any questions.

Best,
Dr. Phil
